Prisoner

She is tired of sitting there warming the skin

Of people who don't understand

She's not a machine and she's not a slave

So she runs as fast as she can

She whispers goodbye to the ones who pray

Whispers in fits of hurried words

And she whispers goodbye to the skies

And she whispers goodbye to the birds

She's finished, she is

And this job has been done

So she waits until dusk

And then begins to run

It's terror on her heels

She never can go back

But she never makes it far enough

To brace herself for attack

She is dragged back, fighting

Please, let her go

But the darkness lets up

Leaving her exposed

"No!" She pleads

"Please give me a chance

A chance at freedom

A chance at romance."

But she's a prisoner to many

And a star to many alike

So she can't run away

Though she does try

And the night fades away

To run away too

And the sun waves goodbye

To the light of the moon

She wants to meet him

To grasp his light in hers

And to know she is save

With his words murmured

But they won't let her go

She is a prisoner to them

So the sun begins her day

Haggard; once again
