Hey! This was my article one week because I write for the local paper. Please feel free to post your thoughts or even more fun--make your own!
This week, I want to introduce you to homeschool and the top ten assumptions people make.
10. Kids are forced to homeschool: Most homeschoolers have asked to be homeschooled, or have chosen that due to their lifestyle.
9. Homeschool is done for religious purposes: I can’t say sometimes it isn’t. But most of the time it is done for unreligious purposes, such as a child having bullying problems at school or a child finding schoolwork too easy. Some have chosen it due to their life style.
8. Homeschooling is about sitting at a desk and doing work: Excuse me, but that is what public school is about. Some homeschoolers may sit at a desk and do work, but I promise, it won’t be for seven hours a day!
7. There aren’t many homeschoolers: This is a very false assumption. The estimated number of homeschoolers in our state alone from 2008-2009 was 26,146. That’s a lot for one state!
6. Kids that homeschool have disabilities: Just because someone is homeschooled doesn’t mean they have a disability. What does it matter if they do? Homeschooled children are very intelligent. The more special the better!
5. Homeschoolers miss out on a lot of public school experiences: Not true! There are homeschool proms, clubs and co-ops. Homeschool kids get as many, if not more, experiences as public school children.
4. Homeschooling is too difficult: This is something that many people assume. But you can do it! If your child is having problems at school, don’t hesitate to help them.
3. Homeschoolers won’t have careers: This information is from familyeducation.com from a study partially funded by the Department of Education: “For younger students this (grade level) is a one year lead. By the time homeschool students are in eighth grade, they are four years ahead of their public/private school counterparts.”
2. Homeschoolers don’t learn anything: Homeschoolers learn many things from life skills, such as cooking and cleaning at an early age. They are each very intelligent in their own way,
1. This is easily the assumption most made-that homeschoolers aren’t socialized! I’ve had experiences where people have asked how we’re social. I always reply that we are active in co-op, see friends weekly and have extra activities we do to meet new people. This shows that homeschoolers are social as well as public school children!
This is my opinion on homeschooling and I’m proud to stick with it! Our family is very active. I myself take voice lessons, do a weekly co-op, have gatherings at friends’ homes once a week, play piano and take field trips. As of now, I’m pursuing an interest in writing. I’ve hope I’ve shown you that homeschooling is quite the opposite of what people may think.
(On number nine, that is not meant to be anything against homeschool done for religious reasons. What I was trying to show people is that it isn't only done just for that!)

Thanks!!!
Thanks! When I said careers, I meant things like college. Some people assume homeschoolers can't go! And I agree with you! I've seen people who wonder how exactly we learn. My question is, how do children in public school learn? All they teach is memorization. And thanks again!
Thanks Eirian!
Yeah, I completely agree with you. Some people think we homeschoolers don't do a lot of things at all. And by career, I think being a mother is a career too! I think people assume we can't go to college, but we have a better chance than some public school children. Thanks again!
Wow really good
Wow I really do agree with you. All of the things you said wad GREAT !!! By the way

Hi Kassady!
Thanks so much! I love getting comments, especially ones like these on the homeschool essay where I get to hear opinions. I'm so excited to be on apricot pie! Thanks a lot for recommending it!
Very very VERY good! I think
Very very VERY good!
I think i may be one of the most unsocialized homeschoolers out there, but honestly, that's just ME. I could never make friends with ANYONE (especially other homeschoolers!) when i was little. I was REALLY shy. But when i was 7, this one (amazing and awesome) girl just started hanigng out with me while we were at a homeschool picnic, and we've been BFFs ever since. My mother tells me its better to have a few very good freinds than tons you hardly know, and i guess that's the way God made me.
Thanks for sticking up for us homeschoolers!
Thanks, Clare!
That's not unsocialized at all! That's great! People really assume we don't talk to anyone but our siblings if we have any. I'm so happy to have feedback on any work I do, this especially. I love to hear what my fellow homeschoolers have to say about it. Afterwards, I did have some family that had assumed wrong before (after seeing that in the paper) tell me honestly that they didn't know that and I really got the chance to explain homeschooling to them. I love to see their faces when I tell them certain things! LOL. One family friend wondered how we learn, especially after reading that article. I just explained that life skills are an important part of daily learning for us. Homeschoolers, when they get old enough, will be the best mothers, cookers (is that proper grammar) and cleaners ever. That's my opinion, of course. I just feel we get the special time to learn that.
Good job!
This is great! You did a fantastic job of defending homeschooling against popular opinion. Rock on!

Thank you!
Hello there!
Hi, HomeschoolGirl. This is Mary. I'm currently searching our dear AP for essays written on the subject of home schooling and I found this one. I've linked to it from my blog, thosewhowillstand.blogspot.com. If you have any problem with this at all, please let me know and I will disconnect the link. Thanks!

Brother: Your character should drive a motorcycle.
Me: He can't. He's in the wilderness.
Brother: Then make it a four-wheel-drive motorcycle!
Thanks!
Thanks! That's fine. I'm glad people are seeing this and liking it! :-)
I liked this :) on the
I liked this :) on the unsocialized issue: Homeschoolers (and unschoolers, as I am) are so much more socialized than public school kids! Just because they're around other kids constantly doesn't mean that the public schoolers are more socialized. They don't get to talk as much. They don't have as much time to get to know each other. There is bullying and peer pressure, which is very unusual in homeschooling communities.
All in all, there were lots of good points!!

Thanks Erin!
Thanks Erin! I completely agree with you. From what I've seen, pubic schooled children often have a tendancy to shy away from conversations with new people and only like to talk to the people they know. Homeschoolers are constantly making new friends, and I think it's great!
When you said in a comment
When you said in a comment that you think homeschoolers will be the best cookers and cleaners in the world--I bet you're right! Personally, right now in my husband's workplace I'm the only wife who sends homecooked meals with her husband every day.
This is a great essay, and I think its great that you get an article in your newspaper every week. That's special!

Thanks!
That's great that you do that. Homeschoolers just have the time and determination to do that sort of stuff. It's not that kids in public school don't--but they'll be doing multiplication why you're making lunch and learning as you go. I've found that public school teaches memorization. Are you really going to know pie (3.14 I think) ten years from now? But cooking and cleaning skills are taught and stay with you forever!
One other thing...
Also i heard from a group of other people that they though homeschoolers had "no life" which is so not true! I mean, public schoolers sit in the same chair, in the same classroom, at the same time every single day, and we're the one missing out on life's expereinces? We're the ones that wake up at 6:00 AM so we can get schoolwork finished and so we can make a fort in the backyard! My life is great! So next time you talk/write to a homschooler, don't say what's wrong with you, just say "PLEASE TAKE ME WITH YOU!"
Ooooh, yes.....
My parents were public-schooled, and I guess that has something to do with us being homeschooled..can't be totally sure...
I most certainly do not have disabilities (thank you very much)....
Have a career? I want to be a mother!
Unsocial? I think NOT!!!!!!!!!!!! I go to church, Bible studies, the occasional birthday/graduation party, the occasional field trip....COME ON!!!!!!
This was a great essay, and lots of people could agree with it.
Good job!!!!!!!! :) :) :>
