Life, part III

Weeks passed and the daily routine became monotonous and I would try to come up with new and interesting things to do to pass the time. I noticed that the napkin rack was a jumbled mess and something had to be done with it. I could enjoy doing it too. Kenny told me I could fix it up if I wanted, so I set about my work.

I bent down and picked up the fallen napkins and folded them gently. Arranging them artistically, I stepped back to view my work. I heard someone coming and turned to see the woman named Pauline hurrying towards me, her little pastel earrings bobbing back and forth in rhythm with her determined walk. I smiled.

"How are you doing today, Pauline?"

She grinned back, happily. "Fine. How about you?" She pointed to the napkins. "That looks like a fun job."

Kenny stuck his white head around the display rack. "You've got to watch Pauline, Margerie, she's a trouble maker."

Pauline shook her head with a little twinkle in her soft gray eyes. "No." She stood quietly for a moment and clicked the end of her pen against the clip board she carried. I bent back to my work.

She looked around uncomfortably for a second then she spoke. "Um, Margerie? I have something for you."

I straightened again and stepped closer to her. "Thanks," I answered, wondering what she meant.

"Now, don't get mad at me. I'm not responsible for this. I'm just the messenger, I don't have anything to do with it." She took something off of her clip board while she spoke.

My head started to spin. What did I do that I would be getting in trouble for? In the split seconds that she was handing me the paper I was trying to think of anything I might have left undone or out of place, or forgotten to do, or something that warranted a note from the back of the store. I could picture the managers' tight faces.

Slowly I unfolded the little yellow sticky note that was crinkled and hastily written across with a blue pen. I frowned with furrowed brows as I read: Matt (330) 441-0612. I think I even said out loud a confused, "What?"

Pauline smiled and looked closely at me. "Do you know who that is?"

I shook my head, still holding the paper awkwardly. "No I don't. I have no idea."

"Well he told me to give that to you. His name is Matt, um, I don't remember his last name, but he works in the meat and produce department."

I looked back down at the number. He could have added a 'call me' with a smiley face after the number and it wouldn't have made me any more surprised and taken aback then I was. Wasn't that what the note meant? How spoiled and presumptuous and--

"Oh, yeah, I know him!" Kenny looked over my shoulder at the note and grinned.

Pauline still stood watching my reaction. "Do you even know what he looks like?"

"I've never seen him ever. I mean, I don't even know that." I was so confused and annoyed and didn't even know what to think or feel.

Pauline looked at Kenny. "Well, he's tall, and thin...brown hair..."

"He wears baseball caps, and he drives a really hot sports car," Kenny added, importantly.

     I scoffed on the inside.

Pauline nodded. "Anyway, I told him I'd give that to you." She turned with a little glance over her shoulder and then bobbed away back to her business.

I jammed the paper into my back pocket. "Whatever," I muttered.

Kenny chuckled. "I forgot to tell you about the dating network here."

I looked up at him annoyed. "I just wish he'd have the guts to come right out and talk to me." I said it more to myself than to anyone.

"He's shy." He tilted his head. "I was shy too."

My disbelief must have translated to my features because he chuckled.

"No, really, I was. I had a sports car too," he went on. "It was a teal blue with a black dash cutting through the side....everyone thought it was the coolest thing..."

I toned him out, pretending to listen and wondered what the heck I would do next. What was there to do? Who was he and how did he know where I worked, and how did he know my name even?
