They appear dark, and straight. They are clear, and yet they hold mysteries.
There is something unknown.
What makes the branches turn?
Why is their bark rough and lined with knots and swirls?
And then, sometimes smooth and soft with barely any mark or dirt?
Unknown….
On a hilltop above everything you can gaze at a mountain peak behind the town.
There is an edge, a line. What lies beyond?
There is a blend of color down below of the many leaves.
It is climbing to the top, but then comes the edge and to what cannot be seen.
Vision is controlled. One could guess what lies beyond, more of the small thick trees,
They could guess there were perhaps different species.
Pines and firs.
What lies on the other side? By looking you could not be sure.
Still, unknown….
It is like a blank white page.
But does not the word unknown make us think of haze?
How can a thing be hazy and clear?
And things that are so familiar to our vocabulary still be weird?
How can things be black and white?
Questions. Unknown answers. No bright light.
Unknown….
It can be blunt,
And yet it can be hazy.
It can be stark,
And yet it can be blurred.
It can be frank,
And yet it can be misty.
It can be honest,
And yet it can be deceiving.
It can be striking,
And yet it can be bland.
No grey in between the things unknown,
Unlike our life with it’s mixed tones.
Clear and hazy at the same time,
Which somehow doesn’t seem to sound right.
But with an exception these opposites unite,
And for a time they hold fingers,
In the black and white.
