nerf war

Submitted by Madeline on Mon, 04/09/2012 - 19:52

frantic loading
of bullets
soft ones
not real but
deadly
all the same

she ducks her head
narrowly avoids
being hit

"you cheated!" they yell
the sting taken from the
words
with the smiles on their
faces

the offender smirks
"tell me how."
but they
can't
because they
cheat too

the first girl is
out
down she goes
staining her
jeans with grass
a lush green
buried in her
giggles
at having lost

alliances are formed
formal handshakes
lives at stake
at least in their
minds

with smiles they
charge forward
bad aim
good aim
doesn't matter

boy goes
down
reluctantly
wanted to
win
but wants to play
fair

boy, girl, boy
left to fight
another girl
group formed
though only
one will
win

"i'll shoot him," boy says
"okay," girl says back
they convince the boy to be
on their team

last girl is taken
down
leaving three

before boy can
get other boy
girl shoots
both of
them

she has
won
not to be trusted

they believed they
would beat her
a dark horse
in this silly
competition

but the victory is
soured
by the boy who grins
and says
"guess who I'm getting first
next time?"

guess what?
she's out.

I love Nerf wars, and this was a fun poem capturing them well! :)

Thank you! :) I love them, too. We had our cousins over for Easter weekend and I swear we played for two or three hours. I felt like a little kid. LOL! My brothers are obsessed with nerf guns...they have an arsenal and everything. It's crazy! So, basically I live nerf guns! I figured it was time I write a poem about it. :D
Thanks!

I know this is going to sound odd, but my favorite part was about the grass stain.

I have hated the words and I have loved them, and I hope I have made them right. --The Book Thief

LOVE NERF! Of course... my picture sort of tells that too, hehehe! I love this poem, totally captures a nerf gun fight! Remember the one we had in your basement? We were talking about homeschool proms while the boys and my sister were planning. LOL! We finally just left quietly and they stayed down in the basement for... fifteen? Twenty minutes? LOL! We were upstairs drinking tea and eating chocolate I think? Hehehe!
