The Lighthouse Keeper

He lives in a sand-bleached tower
No, he’s not a fairy tale
He’s a mighty, regal light house soldier
While his enemies are rain and hail

His bed is small with cotton sheets
They barely keep him well
He shivers under the blanket of night
Why the gray waves swell

He stays up until dawn some days
Battling out a storm
Flashing light across the water
To make sure ships stay warned

He’s saved and ended lives, he’s had
His eyes no longer tear
His hands are rough and calloused
His heart is rid of fear

He’s lived here since his youth
When days were short and fun
When his spirit didn’t care
If he didn’t see the sun

He’s tired, one night, as he hobbles up
Lights the light house light
Waits for the signaled ships
To make it through the night

But his hands are slipping into sleep
And his eyes are drooping free
So the lighthouse keeper ends the night
With his heart at sea
