A Lifetime

 A lifetime of memories

Starting with the first

A light shining in the eyes

And then unending thirst

A few words spared

That first night

But in utter disbelief

Came first light

How can days

Go from dark to sunny

How can time

Go from slow to speedy

It was all very confusing

To one such as you

Darkness did envelop

Everything that was true

Who was this person

Who kept you clean

Despite that darkness

She was never un-seen

And then the eyes opened

Into a world of color

And you were introduced

To your sisters and mother

Your brother paid you no mind

Not a spare glance

Everything hurt

In his presence

Then bites and growls

How strange this was

You bit them back

That would show them who's boss

*********

A year passed

No more were your thoughts

In rhymes and beats

They sort of matched

Golden blues

Can blues be golden

Velevt silk

Can silk be velvet

Your mother thought so

As she layed there with you

Pushed you away

And bid you goodbye

With tears in the eyes

As if tears could be formed

You walked away

Into the unknown

******

Thougts became jambled

And time became short

You grew and were sucessful

In you chase to the hunt

You loved the way it felt

How the grass tickled your skin

How the dirt molded itself over your paws

How strong and powerful the final jump felt

You were proud to eat a decent meal

They always felt good as they were bigger

Sweet, sort of, but hard

The small ones were finished too quickly

********

You knew they were coming

Maybe it was weeks, or years

But your stomach swelled

And your skin hugged your bones

It took time, but you ate

They were always small now

You couldn't move as fast

But they were still good

You found a place

Between to large rocks

And thistles gaurded you

Along with prickly flowers

They would have to be careful

When they came

But you would teach them

And they would know

And then on a starry night

A navy blue coated the sky

Casting shadows over you

They came

Little heads first

Then paws

And tails

They were sweet

You licked them clean

And settled down for a nap

They curled up happily

And fell into a slumber

*****

Thirt much like yours

Preoccupied their minds

This thirts was always in their heads

A lifetime of kitten crys

You kept them well

Only one went into the thorns

The runt of the litter

Flourished

They all did well

And then one day

After they skampered

And were naughty

You pushed them away

Annoyed but loving

And watched them go

Into the world

*****

And now you sit

By a roaring fire

The flames enveloping

Every stick that is offered

Your food comes for you

That's always lovely

All you have to do is sit

And eat and watch and listen

You wonder about those kittens

And how lovely they were

And hoped they'd all had good outcomes

Like you

*******

A cat's lifetime

Is short but sweet

They don't take things for granted

All they need is something to eat

Why can't we be more like them

Doing what we're taught

Listening and watching

Never acting fraught

If there is one thing we should do

It is to listen and love

A cat is wise

A gift from above

Listen to the waves

Watch there become more

Of rain and life and care

Let your heart soar
