For three days in March, my homeschool friends and I were taking the Iowa Standardized tests together and after all the tests were completed, we all went to my library to watch "A Dolphin Tale" that was playing for free. This is my review.

The positives:

This movie’s theme music was absolutely beautiful, thrilling, and sea-ish. It made me want to memorize the whole piece all at once and play it on the piano. The sea animals (dolphins, school of fish) made the music even more beautiful. Their glorious leaps from the ocean and into the air and back again added to the beauty and simplicity of this movie…even though there is a great chance that they were computerized.

I don’t like to watch a 2 hour movie and feel as if I could have spent my time better. (But since I don’t watch much TV, especially we don’t have cable or the antennae, I haven’t had that feeling come to me much.) So I appreciated the fact that there were no unnecessary scenes. All scenes linked together in importance.

Where the story mainly took place, the Marine hospital was fantastic and it nearly made me want to visit one. The music helped a lot too. The story line was believably realistic and it was good to know that it is based on a true story.

As a homeschooler, I was so surprised that I almost fell out of my seat when the secondary main character said that she was homeschooled. My friends and I looked at each other and smiled knowingly. I was so glad. I also thought that it was neat.

Now for the negatives:

The language in this movie was good, excluding words like ‘gosh’ and a few other words on that same level. But there is some very, very minor disrespectful talk from the son to the mom at the middle of this movie. But it was so minor that I am not going to take points off it. Also, there are some disobedience from the main character such as skipping school and lying about it.

While watching this movie, you must keep in mind that this is not a Christian production and so character’s actions may not be satisfactory sometimes.

No scary scenes, but there were a few scenes that made you jump in fright (a seagull that pops out of nowhere, etc) but it never crossed limits.

The costumes…well, let’s just say that they didn’t really suit my tastes. Ladies’ shirts were too low cut, skirts too short, and jeans too tight.

But overall, the movie was thrilling, the music ethereally creative, the characters relatable, and the storyline realistic. I loved it.

Out of five stars, I give this movie, “A Dolphin Tale”… a satisfied four.
