It Is Enough

Sometimes I wonder if we ask too much of life. We have our idea of what we would like life to be, all neatly arranged out according to our dreams and goals. And more often than not, we work towards achieving those dreams and goals and we get disappointed when we don't achieve them.

I'm sure we've all had our childhood dreams and fantasies, whether of shining armour or pretty girls, it does not matter. What matters is that we dream, and those dreams in turn shape and influence the goals we set later on in life.

It only makes me wonder, again, if we are the ones unwittingly setting ourselves up for disappointment and heartbreak when those dreams are not fulfilled. Maybe a seed of bitterness gets planted, even if we are unaware of it. And over time, cynicism and sceptism get added to the mix.

The term "older and wiser" is very true, but I wonder if older and wiser folk have lost the idealism of youth. It scares me - I don't want to be wise and yet lose idealism along the way.

Or perhaps it is a rite of passage to lose one's idealism along the journey of life, and that we live and learn.

Sometimes I am tempted to complain that life is full of disappointments and never what we want it to be. But I realise that for me, it is enough. It will have to be enough.
