Quest for the Treasure, Chapter 9

Tala walked quietly down the hall and knocked twice on her master’s door, doing it timidly since she knew that her master was in a bad mood.

Come in!”

Tala hesitated, then slowly opened the door and slipped inside. Bowing her head, she said, “The girl is nowhere to be found.”

A look of fury came upon Hadrians’ face. “Look harder!” he snapped. “You have two eyes to use, so use them!”

Yes, Master,” Tala said obediently, leaving the room.

Hadrian stood and paced angrily. “And I thought those spies were loyal!”

Jezebel said, “We are all fools at one time or another.”

Hadrian whirled on her. “So you think! Me, foolish? It is YOU who is foolish. And that SON of mine is even more of a fool.” He sat down, removed his cloak, and looked at the cveiling as if it contained the answer to his problem.

Jezebel kept quiet for a while, knowing that he was thinking. “Then she said, “I wasa young fool once, and so were you.”

Never thought I’d hear THAT bit of wisdom coming from your mouth,” Hadrian muttered.

Jezebel, with no reaction to Hadrian’s comment stood and left the room.

Hadrian drew a dagger from its sheath and toyed with it, returning it to its sheath soon after.

Gyran and Karan were hurriedly eating, wanting to get back to searching so that they would not be punished by Hadrian. The bad-tasting waterweed soup, usually despised by the twins, was downed quickly, along with the half-cooked, wormy potatoes.

. “This is the worst food I’ve ever tasted in my life!” Gyran complained. “Hadrian gets the best stuff, all of it!”

If Hadrian or one of his headquarters spies hears you yammering, it’s not the food you’ll be worrying about!” Karan hissed. “You’ll be worrying about keeping that head o’ yores attached to the rest of your body!”

Gyran finished with one last complaint. “We gotta do all the work while Hadrian r’laxes!”

Karan rolled his eyes as he held his temper back. “Will ya just HUSH!” He looked around.

Come on, let’s beat it before someone listens in on us.”

The pair slipped away, making sure that their weapons were ready.

Hadrian had just finished eating a luxurious meal and was reading the latest reports on the search for Emily:

Emuly gurl not fownd. Wil keep lukking.

Zarid

No success. Wil obay orders to keep surching.

Tala

Found fresh footprints going away from inn. Two pairs of feet tredding hevily.

Gyran and Karan

Hadrian grumbled, “All negative reports. They’d better find that girl, or else!” He ground the reports into the dirt floor. He muttered a, “Come in,” when a knock sounded on the door.

Pike slipped inside, bowing his head respectfully. “We found several sets of fresh footprints not too long ago. We followed ‘em and came to a fire with several teenagers around it.”

Capture any?” Hadrian said, looking at the ceiling.

No, but we will if you want us to,” Pike answered.

Capture who you think is the leader,” Hadrian ordered.

Yes, Master,” Pike left the room.

That leader just might be a good addition to our army,” Hadrian commented, as he got up and left the room.

A few miles away from Hadrian’s lair, the camp that Pike and Pogisa had found was being broken. The two knelt in the bushes, waiting for a chance to capture the leader.

The leader, obviously a boy slightly younger and Pike and Pogisa, was putting out the fire as he gave orders. “Breanna, help Dan take down the tent. Cien, Marya, get the food packs ready to go. Raen, Jaza, make sure everybody’s weapons are clean and sharpened. Jarein, Matt, keep an eye out for intruders.” He scooped up one last handful of dirt and threw it on the coals.

Hey, Jason, your sword’s missing,” Raen called. “It was here five minutes ago.”

Jason, the leader, wandered over. “Hey, who took my sword?!”

Everyone looked at him, with raised eyebrows. To Jason, the answer was obvious.

Jason picked up the short sword of one of his crew and walked around the clearing, poking in bushes and peering around.

Pike stood and slowly, but boldly, walked out. He was first noticed by Raen.

Raen spoke up. “Jason, we got the culprit. Look who’s got your sword.”

Jason put down the short sword he was holding down and drew his slim dagger from its sheath hanging from the belt around his waist. “I would be most pleased if you gave my sword back.”

As you wish,” Pike said mildly. “Come an’ get it.”

As Jason advanced, his dagger was held tightly in his hand, ready to strike should it be a trick. And it was a good thing, for as soon as he had gotten his sword back, Pike had his own in hand.

What do you want?” Jason asked.

You,” Pike answered.

Jason’s crew grabbed their weapons and stood looking expectantly at their leader.

Jason narrowed his eyes. “I’ll say this much: let’s have a sword fight. If I win, we go free. If you win, you get me.”

Pike tossed his sword from hand to hand. “You’ve got a deal.”

The pair stood looking at each other for a while. Then they advanced.

Pike charged at his opponent. Jason stepped aside and slashed at Pike’s arm.

Pike ignored the pain and the fight continued. Pike was on the losing side, even though he was older and had handled weapons for a longer period of time.

Jason had had swordfights many times before and had won quite a bit. Victory in sword fighting had won Matt, Raen, and Jaza into his group. He grinned and fought harder than ever. Jaza, though a girl, was a good sword fighter and he had just barely beat her.

Jason! Come on, stop with the swords! Show ‘im what you’ve really got!” Jaza shouted.

How does that sound?” Jason said to Pike. “She wants me to show my stuff! Do you want to see?”

No,” Pike said, pointing his sword at Jason. “That’s not fair play.”

Oh, I use weapons,” Jason said. “They’re just a little different than what you’re used to.” He put out his right hand.

ZING!!

There,” Jason said. “Done, for a while at least.”

Pike stood frozen, trapped in an ice statue of himself..

Jason’s crew loaded up and just before they headed out, Jason put out his left hand and released weak electricity.

He’ll melt out after a little while,” Jason said. “Let’s go.”

The group went off.

Pogisa rushed out and built a fire next to his companion, helping him melt out faster. When he did melt out, They ate a quick meal, warmed up, and headed back to Hadrian’s lair.

In the meantime, Jason’s companions were congratulating him on his easy victory. He was trying to be as modest as he could, which, in everyone else’s opinion, was hardly so.

No prob, that guy was a piece of pie,” Jason said.

Then let’s go back and eat ‘im!” Dan said in a sarcastically enthusiastic voice.

I’m not a cannibal, Dan. Sorry,” said Jason. “He looked too tough anyways.”

Jaza’s arm suddenly went to her sword hilt. “What was that?!”

Raen who was in front, leading the way, stopped abruptly. Jason ran into him, and Breanna, Matt, and Jarein, who were right behind him, ran slap bang into them. Dan, Marya, Cien, and Jaza, who were at the end, bumped into everyone in front of them. Everyone fell into a pile.

Jason pushed Dan’s foot away from his face. “Jarein, get off me!” he said in an annoyed tone.

Sorry, but Marya and Jaza are on top of me,” Jarein said.

The pile of teenagers started to come apart and untangle.

What was that all about?” Jason said. “Why did Raen stop?”

Jaza startled me,” Raen said. “I think something bothered her.”

Something surprised me,” Jaza said. “It’s not my fault.”

Some nearby shrubs rattled, and they all turned to the noise.

The source stepped out.

Who are HIS spies?” Emily wanted to know.

Don’t ask right now!” Andromeda said. “We need to hide, and fast.” She grabbed Emily’s hand. “Come on!”

Emily followed her at a run. “Where are we going?”

Shh!” Cassiopeia whispered. “They’ll hear us!”

After running down a hall that was off the kitchen, Cassiopeia stopped, fumbled for a secret knob, and opened a secret door. They hurried inside, the rest of their companions right behind them.

The small room that was now packed with people was nearly bare, except for a few supplies. All that could be heard was quiet breathing.

Moments passed. Emily sank to the ground, longing for a breath of fresh air. Then Perseus spoke up.

Where’s David?”

His sisters exchanged glances and grinned.

Perseus looked at them strangely. “It’s not funny. He could be getting murdered right now!”

Probably not,” Cassiopeia said. “We know his secrets.”

Her brother looked at her suspiciously. “What?”

Well, he can shoot electricity from his right hand, and ice from his left,” Andromeda spoke up.

I wouldn’t want to be his enemy,” Emily said, straightening herself.

I guess not.” Perseus leaned against the wall.

They quieted upon hearing strange voices.

They jus’ disappeared, like that, Itachi!” The speaker snapped her fingers. “They ain’t magic, though. They must be hidin’ somewheres.”

Really?” came a sarcastic male voice. “You’re soooooo smart, aren’t you?”

Well, I am a spy. We gotta be smart to be spies.”

I didn’t know that either, Bronte!” came the sarcastic male voice again.

The footsteps suddenly stopped. Emily hardly dared to breathe.

What was that?”

I dunno, Bronte. Let’s go an’ check. Maybe there’s still some’ne there.”

The footsteps went back down the passage.

After a while, Perseus said, “Let’s go check and see if David’s OK.”

He opened the door and let everyone out.

All was quiet until they reached the main room. They heard something that made their heads turn up. The sound was repeated again, only not as loud. Afterwards, they heard David’s voice.

Hope that worked. Now they won’t remember where we live.”

Perseus rolled his eyes. “David and technology. Good grief!” He looked at Conrad. “He obviously invented something and decided to try it out on Itachi and Bronte. He must have created a ten-minute memory zapper or something like that.”

Conrad laughed nervously. “If you’re right, I’m glad I’m not the enemy.”

They heard boots clumping, and after a while, David came in.

He saw them staring at him questioningly.

Hi,” he said casually. “I was getting rid of those two, knowing what a good relationship you have with them.” He returned to his laboratory.

The two other young guests, Zafir and Zahara, went to the kitchen with Cassiopeia and Andromeda to make a quick breakfast for them all. Emily soon joined them.

Caelan gave Conrad a look that had passed between them many times before. “Thanks for your hospitality, Perseus, but Emily and I need to leave...”

OK,” Perseus said. “Why don’t you go into the kitchen and ask Cassiopeia to pack you some supplies for your departure?”

Thanks,” said Caelan, and left the room. He soon returned with a lumpy sack and Emily. “Goodbye, guys, hope to see you soon,” he said, and Emily also said goodbye.

Emily and Caelan exited the underground house.

Where are we going?” Emily asked.

To a place called Zanna’s inn,” Caelan answered. “If all went well, it would take about five days to get there. but since Corin is in our way, it will take about a week.

What’s so bad about it?” Emily asked.

It is a town simply packed with evil,” Caelan said. “When we get there, stay close to me.”

Why can’t we go around it?” Emily asked.

The town is surrounded by a swamp,” Caelan replied. “You can only go in and out at the back and front of the town... unless you wanted to die.”

Were you ever told that there was a swamp there?” Emily wondered.

No,” Calean said. “I was one of the first people in written history to survive after stumbling into that swamp.”

How big is that swamp?” Emily said.

It’s one of the longest swamps in Galandria,” Caelan said. “It’s the fifth largest swamp.”

Do you know what the biggest swamp is called?” Emily asked.

It is called the Zrahvic Sjah Swamp,” Caelan replied, tossing her an apple. “It’s found in the southernmost parts of Galandria.”

I had a cousin who went to visit the southern parts of Galandria,” Emily said. “I guess she went there. I haven’t seen her since.” She looked at Caelan curiously. “Do you travel a lot?”

Yes, I do,” Caelan answered. “I have been to many regions of Galandria, including the Fire Mountains.”

How did you survive?” Emily asked in amazement.

I do not know,” Caelan said. “I do know that I managed to get away with this.” He pulled up a sleeve and Emily saw that his arm, below the elbow, was covered in burn scars. “I met up with Flame.”

Flame? Who’s that?”

Caelan looked surprised. “You haven’t heard of Flame”

Well...no,” Emily said. “Who is Flame?”

No one really knows if flame is a he or a she,” Caelan said. “Some say that this person guards Galandria’s most ancient, priceless treasure. Others say that this person works for someone evil. Still others claim that he or she is a figment of the imagination.” Caelan suddenly paused and sniffed the air. “Something’s not right,” he said, frowning. “I have a feeling that I do not like. That’s strange, because the last time I came this way, everything seemed all right.” he sniffed the air again. “I knew it! It’s them, definitely. Get down and crawl into a bush. I should have remembered we were here. We’re in the Woods of the Black Ones!”
