Evolution and the Bible

Submitted by Hannah D. on Wed, 06/12/2013 - 00:22

This is a topic that I've really been interested in for a while, and have already written a lot on. So here's my summary on the whole creation-evolution debate discussing science and the Bible.

Animal Morality?

Submitted by Hannah D. on Wed, 05/29/2013 - 17:40

It has often been observed that animals care for each other. Members of dolphin pods have been known to care for their sick, even pushing them to the surface to breathe periodically when a wound prevents them from doing it on their own. Elephants mourn their dead, murmuring softly amongst themselves when they encounter elephant bones or a place where a friend was once killed. A recent experiment was done on mice showing that they will learn to unlock a cage that has trapped a fellow mouse.

A Complete and Thorough Defense of Atheism: Epilogue

Frederick glanced once more over the last letter from his mysterious friend. A smile crept slowly over his lips. Had quaint old Mr. Dogood been a Christian all this time?

The even queerer style of his penmanship made the words seem to hover of the page. The classroom was empty now. Even the Professor had had to leave soon after class. Folding the letter back into his backpack, he walked to the teacher’s desk. It didn’t take many opening and closing of drawers to find an old-fashioned ink-well with a calligraphy pen.

A Complete and Thorough Defense of Atheism: Chapter 5

Dear Frederick,

I cannot express how truly sorry I am for you and your family. Such an experience is so terrible, and yet, so frighteningly common. Pain and death are natural but ghastly aspects of our world. A great many previously religious people have turned to atheism for the same reason you have. It is simply too difficult for them to believe in a loving God who permits death and suffering.

Now Frederick, I know this is difficult, and that these wounds still pierce you afresh, but you must try to understand me. As atheists, we know:

1. There is no God.

A Complete and Thorough Defense of Atheism: Chapter 4

Dear Frederick,
Good to hear you’re beginning to see things the way they are. Now that you've accepted the atheistic view of morality, it is time to move on to another subject: logic.

Logic, as far as we are concerned, is a method of argument. It is a procedure of a chain of reasoning that either deductively (necessarily) or inductively (in all probability) reaches a conclusion. The study of logic defines and categorizes, and constructs and puts to use, all the different logical methods of argument.

A Complete and Thorough Defense of Atheism: Chapter 3

Dear Frederick,

You ask some good questions. To answer them I must come to the foundations of atheism, and particularly its beliefs about morality.

Many atheists – and most agnostic evolutionists – assert that morality comes from animals. Animals help each other, they work together, they learn to cooperate; some, such as elephants, even mourn a relative’s death. Numerous experiments have been done on how far an animal will go to save a friend in distress; results have been promising for those out to look for our own evolution of morality and altruism.

Dear Mr. Dogood,

I was not aware that I had signed myself up for a full-blown course in atheism. Thank you for that last little history.

Again, I assure you that I am perfectly convinced of the importance of being an atheist. I share your enthusiasm but lack your time for writing (or reading!) such long letters.

However, I must admit, your assertion that atheism is rare in this country is a bit surprising. I thought I saw it everywhere. I don’t think we are as doomed as you may appear to assert.

Sincerely,

Fred

Dear Frederick,

It was early in the afternoon, and everything about the day suggested cheerfulness, from the quaint little birds, to the lazily floating clouds, to the students chatting in the park with the great relief they all feel on a Saturday. Under a tree, sitting at a wooden bench, overlooking the entire grassy knoll, the Professor sat in attentive conversation.

Does God Really Exist?

In our postmodern culture, the attitude toward belief has changed drastically from the traditional view that has been held throughout the ages. A desire to discover the reason behind belief is often greeted with confusion, incredulity, or even hostility. Truth has come to be a meaningless word, for truth is supposed to be relative. Everyone's "truth" is equally valid. No belief has any greater truth or validity than another. With this view on truth, it is logical to ask why we need care about the reasons behind belief.

The Truth About Mormonism (part 4): Oracles of the Prophets

In the previous parts of this essay, we examined the written scriptures of the LDS (latter-day saints) church, discovering the flaws in them. In this part, we will examine the spoken scriptures of the Mormon church, demonstrating that the Mormon view of Scripture is incompatible with the orthodox Christian view. We will also examine these spoken scriptures to determine their trustworthiness.
