A Prayer for the Soldiers

Submitted by Edith on Wed, 06/27/2007 - 03:15

Guns roaring
The day is wet
Airplanes soaring
And their speeding jets.
The men sit down to say
Their prayers each day
Before they rise
Before they eat
Before they fight
Before they sleep.

Fighting for our Country
They try to survive
Yearning for freedom
Giving back our lives
Pray for them
Son or friend
Father or cousin
Because they defend
A world so bright
Learning to fight.

Gettysburg's Trials

It was four o’clock in the morning when the alarm bells started ringing. I knew my Master, Thomas Galway, would be in the stable soon. We had camped in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for three days with still no sign of the Confederate’s gray uniforms. I never had a good night’s rest, for the camp went to sleep by eight o’clock and was usually disturbed with false alarms. But tonight was different. Men, carrying lamps, started to stream into the barn, unlatching stall doors and putting the tack on their horses.

Painful Memories

These scars that mark the countryside and mar the pretty view
Remind us of a harder time when all that man could do
Was fight to keep his homeland free, and save the joys he knew

The crumbled trenches and white crosses that mark where soldiers lie
Painfully remind us of the days when our boys died
In honor of their sacred land and sunlit native skies

The echo of the cannon boom still rings in many ears
And remembered is the painful wait for the news that we all feared
To hear of death of those we loved and those that we held dear

Where you are, nobody knows
“Missing in action” is how the story goes
It was a secret ambush, or maybe a failed attack
But in any case, you never came back

For family and friends, life won’t be the same,
And you can be sure, they’ll remember your name
But as for your country, you might feel betrayed
You might be thinking, “They’ll forget in a day”
