The rocks sang from the sound of his horn
His voice sounded clear in Angband
Morgoth’s creatures move in fear
As their Lord climbed slowly like thunder
The Lord of Darkness issued forth
In black armor he was clad
He stood before the Lord of the Noldor
Like a tower casting a shadow
Fingolfin gleamed beneath him
A star in the dark of night
His armor was of sliver
Ringil, his sword glistened like ice
Blue was his shield
Set crystals that shined
Filled with wrath and despair
He faced the Dark Lord
Morgoth’s shield was vast
Strong and over-coming
Facing Fingolfin
This Valar knew fear
Grond the mace of Morgoth
Hammer of the Underworld they call it
Down like a bolt of lightning
Fingolfin leapt lightly aside
A pit there was where Grond had struck
And smoke and fire issued forth
Again and again Grond came down
And Fingolfin lightly sprang aside
And Ringil Sang
in-between and smote the Dark Lord
Seven times Morgoth cried out in pain
That echoed out into the North-lands
The demons of Morgoth shrank back
As their master was wounded by Ringil
Falling on their faces
Overcome with fear
Soon Fingolfin tired
And Morgoth crushed him with his shield
To his knees the Noldor Lord was sent
Shield crushed and helm broke
He stumbled as he dodged the mace
Down into a pit he fell
Morgoth’s eyes gleamed with hate
Upon his throat Morgoth stepped
A falling hill was the weight of that foot
And with a final effort
Fingolfin hewed the shoe
And black smoking blood filled the pits
Thus passed Fingolfin, High King of the Noldor
A valiant Elven-king of old
Orcs boast not over that duel
And the Elves sorrow too deep
Morgoth took his body
And there he broke
And would cast it to his wolves
But for the eye of Thorondor, king of eagles
Thorondor rushed on the winds of Manwe
Blemishing Morgoth’s face, he took the King
Up into the sky he soared
And the arrows of orcs fell too short
In the hidden valley of Gondolin
Thorondor laid him
And to that mountain top Turgon came
A cairn over his father he made
On Morgoth’s face there is a scar
Thorondor, Lord of Eagles had made
Morgoth could not heal
And his pain was forever more
