The song of life starts when we are born
then follows us as we grow
It shows the fear, the love, the pain
and then it shows happiness again
It shows the faith we have in God
It shows the hope we get from above
It plays the joy, the laughter, the shame
It plays the tears, that fall like rain
It plays the sweet and plays the sour
going on hour after hour
Never ceasing in its strain
Soaring, hoping, calling again
screeching, running, jumping, falling
howling, clutching, grabbing, touching
floating, gliding, flowing, sighing
haunting, taunting, rolling, growling
Showing what we do and say
what we all did yesterday
Sometimes gently it plays
soft and sweet like a spring rain
hinting what it will be like
when we see eternal life
Sometimes rough it plays like thunder
pounding on hour after hour
Sometimes bitter it will be
showing all our jealousy
Sometimes reckless it will sound
just like waves swift homeward bound
Crashing, spraying, foaming, raging
stopping suddenly--silent--then playing
showing how our life can cheat us
trying to keep us all from Jesus
Singing: no matter what they do,
they can't keep Jesus away from you.
As the martyrs sang AMEN!
trembling temples built by men,
singing their hearts out to their God
not caring if it means they're found.
sounding glorious with trumpet blasts
showing how hard be some of our tasks.
Showing the aging and the changing
playing us right up to the ending.
And then it ceases with one last blast
stopping now, the end at last.
The soul goes from this world now
to wherever it might go
leaving this world forever
and the song to God alone.
