let me dance

I hear it.
Whispering through my window,
tapping at the pane,
Calling me out.
They're already dancing,
their grass skirts swaying in the wind
it tugs at my legs
at the hem of my dress
as I stand on the sidelines
wanting to join in,
waiting...waiting...
I sway with the rhythm
of the earth and the sky
Spinning above me,
Laughing.
I laugh too.
I throw my hands up
and run wild
run free
the howling wind at my ankles
as we fly across the fields,
screaming at the top of my lungs
From the top of Old Man Gowers hill
everything is turning
and shaking.
The thunder booms in the distance,
the sky is black above me.
I raise my face as the first drops of rain
soak my skin.
I hear it
drenching the wheat
kissing the starved soil.
The prairie is singing,
and I am singing too.
