I was sitting on a bench, and I saw a moth next to me. That inspired this poem...
------------------
1.
Once
One night
With nothing to do
And nowhere I really needed to go
I went down and sat
On a bench
In the subway station
At night
And a greasy gray florescent bulb
Was the only light.
2.
I sat on a bench
And on the wall
Above my head
Graffiti, in weary letters, proclaimed
Various half imagined truths
And called each other names.
3.
And then I saw,
On the wall,
Flickering it’s feathery quills at me,
There sat a moth
And I looked at him
And so, of course, he looked at me
And so we sat there
And we stared at each other
And the night went by
And then the sun
Rose with a sigh.
4.
The sun rose
The traffic increased
The subway trains came alive again
Everyone rushing to and fro...
Everyone, that is, except me
And the moth.
We sat there still
Looking at each other
I looked at him
And he looked at me
And we sat like that
In the subway station
And above our heads
Rushed a busy nation.
5.
The sun faded
The crowds ceased.
The subway station
Emptied mostly,
Except for the moth
And me.
The trains still ran,
Like ghosts trains they ran,
Not realizing the people were gone.
And the moth and I sat there
And all through the night
The neon signs
Were our only light.
6.
Frozen at midnight,
I shivered, and woke,
And wondered where I was.
I looked up and saw the moth
Still staring at me,
At if he’d seen thousands more like me
And knew that one day, I,
Like them,
Would be gone.
And I was afraid of his eyes...
“Cold here,” I ventured.
“So’s the world,” he replied.

Even though it IS somewhat depressing, I still love it. [I have a weird fascination with the dreary and depressing and morbid. :P] Very, very well done.
