I suppose you could call this a very general statement, but I’m going to make it anyways: Nobody reads fairytales anymore. Perhaps the reason for this is fairytales are the direct opposite of our society today. If we take a glance at the principal parts of fairytales, you may see my point. First rule of fairytales: There’s almost ALWAYS a prince and a princess that meet, instantly fall in love, and then waste no time getting married. Most parents of the twenty- first century would not want their daughters and sons to expect this “unrealistic” lifestyle in their own lives. What I find unrealistic is the fact that these parents are marrying, divorcing, getting re- married, and then divorcing again. Oh, and after that, they just move in with somebody because it’s too much of a “hassle” to get married—again. Talk about unrealistic. Second rule of fairytales: Good defeats evil. The good is really good, too, not some “good” witches, or “friendly” dragons. Fairytales draw the lines very clearly. Knights, princesses, queens, kings, and flowers are good guys. Dragons, giants, and witches are the bad guys. With the atheist mindset of “do what’s best for you”, the primary philosophy of our culture, it isn’t a mystery why the good vs. evil formula has been chucked out the window with Rapunzel’s hair. Third and last rule of fairytales: Sacrifice. Sacrificing yourself for whatever side you are on, good or bad, and doing it passionately. There is no sitting on the fence for these characters, and we would all do well to adopt their mentality. So we’ve examined the points, and I’ve made mine. I now leave it up to you to make your own conclusion, but remember what our beloved G.K. Chesterton said about the matter: “Fairytales do not tell children dragons exist. Children already know. Fairytales tell children that the dragons can be killed.”

Very true. In On Faerie-Stories, J.R.R. Tolkien states that if men ever got into a state where they didn't know truth or didn't want to know truth, Fantasy would become Morbid Delusion.
It's happened.

Very true, Sarah. I agree with most of what you said. However, I love dragons too much to say that they always must be evil....
I guess that's just me. :)

I don't agree with always-evil dragons either; however, I do not wish to start an argument with the people who disagree.

I didn't mean dragons are always bad literally. It was more of a general example, as most fairytales have a BAD dragon. I just used them to prove my point. If that makes any sense at all.... Dragons are cool sometimes...:)

Nicely done. You've made a very good contrast of the two.
One thing however: there is no "s" on "anyway", even if you are using it as slang. "Anyways" is not a word.
