Sitting together on the ice and the snow,
Listening to the wolf howl low,
The boy and his dog sat by the fire,
Under the shadow of the church spire.
They’d wandered that day, far and wide
At every house and farm they tried
To find to lay their heads;
To find a place to make their beds.
With frozen fingers and teary eyes,
The boy gazed up at the starry skies.
With child-like faith and belief unbound
He prayed this prayer, so profound.
“Give me somewhere warm to-night;
Somewhere safe; somewhere light;
Somewhere that I can call my home;
Somewhere that I can call ‘my own’.
Somewhere were I will be loved,
Nevermore to be kicked and shoved.
All I ask is a place called home
So I’ll never again have to roam.”
The sun rose over the top of the spire
Lighting the boy and his burned-out fire,
The dog, lying near, raised his dark head
To nuzzled his master on the icy cold bed.
The cold little cheek, so peaceful and white
Was lifeless and still in the cold morning light.
A droop of the tail; a howl of grief
Told the story of the boy he’d called master and chief.
Away from that place
The dog turned to race,
But at the edge of the wood, he turned back to the scene,
To give one last time at the boy, young and lean.
The boy who had wandered from house to farm,
Seeking a place safe from harm.
A boy who had whispered a prayer to his Maker;
The boy who’s life had been but a vapor.
Sitting alone in the ice and the snow,
Listening to the wolf howl low;
Sitting in the shadow of the church spire
The boy heard the sound of Heaven’s own choir.

Ok, ok...I know what you're all thinking. "How depressing and horrible can you get?" Let's just say I watch too many sad movies; read too many sad book; and make up too many sad songs on my piano! ;)

I love sad and depressing
I love sad and depressing poems! To me it shows that the person had more to him/her, and wanted to write poems that had a meaning, and not just happy poems that ryhmed and nothing else. Well done.

::)
It is somewhat depressing... reminds me of a book called "The Shepherd of the Highlands" my dad read aloud.
I love this part, though:
“Give me somewhere warm to-night;

Somewhere that I can call my home;
Somewhere that I can call ‘my own’.
Somewhere were I will be loved,
Nevermore to be kicked and shoved.

That's beautiful. :)

amazing
This was beautiful and sad! I love sad stuff, it makes me think and actually take a good, long hard look at life; makes me more sensitive to others, to somebody I see on the street.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful poem!

This is so sad, but still
This is so sad, but still really good. Sad, depressing poems make me think though, which is one of the reasons I like them.

It's so sad! It's really sweet, though, with the dog and everything. The boy sounds darling. Nice job.

Lovely
I don't think it's very sad...he went home. His prayer was answered in the most perfect way possible. I really like it. It kind of reminds me of Hans Christian Andersen's Little Match Girl.

I know this is an old poem,
I know this is an old poem, but I thought it was beautiful. Yes, it was kinda sad, but it had a happy ending because God answered the little boy's prayer and took him "home". Well done!
I don’t thrive off of chaos: chaos thrives off of me.

But it's really nice too, I like it.
