Angels He was sitting in the room crying As his wife lay before him dying She needed surgery to keep her heart going You gave her another chance without them ever knowing Who were you, a stranger they’d never met? What were you thinking, what did you hope to get? You paid the bill which they couldn’t pay You gave them a miracle, then quietly walked away They might not understand, but they won’t forget that day She was just a little girl, stepping out on a busy street A car flashed by and there was no retreat You were the one who got in the way You pushed her aside and took on her fate Who were you, a stranger she’d never met? What were you thinking, what did you hope to get? Now she’s grown and puts flowers on your grave She tells her children that they’re the ones you saved But she still can’t understand the sacrifice you made The divorce had torn them apart The wife left the home, trying to find a new start The husband met you when walking along the road He found himself telling you it all, trying to lighten his load Who were you, a stranger he’d never met? What were you thinking, what did you hope to get? You told him to go home, read his Bible and pray He talked to his wife and begged her to stay They got back together and he told her how you helped him that day Who were you? You were an angel, that much they know is true What were you thinking? What were you trying to show? Maybe a smile was all you were seeking Maybe they’ll never know And what did you hope to gain? When others would have called these acts insane You knew how to spread light through dark and rain You only wanted to hear that simple phrase ‘Well done’ As you knelt before the Father and the Son They will always recall What these angels did for them all These were miracles Done by the average man Who were called to make a stand To give a gift To be a helping hand To help, to love, to lift These Were angels
