Chapter three
Once again, they landed hard on the ground.
Jennie fell to her knees again, half crying, half coughing and gasping. Just as before, Freddie pulled her to her feet. Immediately, she hugged him, still sobbing.
They stood like that for a few moments, in her front yard, in the middle of the night.
Finally, she pulled away from him. She looked at him for a minute, and she noticed his beautiful eyes were shining with tears.
She tried to talk, but it came out in stutters. "I...I can't believe...I'm sorry..."
"I know," he whispered. "I know."
"Why? Why did she do it?"
"When I was fifteen, she caught my dad with the maid. Instead of dealing with him then, she let her anger build up over the next two years. Finally, she cracked."
"And killed your dad."
He nodded. "I saw his body out the window."
"But why did she kill you?"
"She was still angry, and I was there."
"Oh, Freddie-"
"Don't." He sighed. "Listen, it happened, neither of us can help that. Let's not dwell on it. At least one good thing came out of it."
He smiled at her. She couldn't help but smile back.
His smile faded quickly. "There's something else I need to tell you."
"What?"
"My mother. Dad moved on quite easily, but, like I said, Mum was angry."
"Go on"
"She's here, in this house."
Jennie was silent. Freddie continued.
"She stays silent if the house is empty. If no-one lives here, it's perfectly ordinary. When somebody moves in, much like you did, it turns into Stephen King's Rose Red."
"How come nobody knows it's haunted?"
"Like I said, if the house is for sale, she's silent. There's no reason for anyone to think it's haunted."
"Haven't any of the previous owners said anything?"
He looked sort of sad and angry, and his voice had a hint of urgency. "That's why I'm telling you this. None of the previous owners have lived to tell about the house. She's killed them all."
He suddenly looked up, as if he'd heard something. When he looked back at her, he saw fear in his eyes.
"You have to get out of here. She's killed alot of people, and she'll kill you too if you don't leave. You have to go now!"

I've never seen a purple cow,
I never hope to see one.
But I can tell you anyhow;
I'd rather see than be one.
