An Ode to Ezra

Submitted by James on Tue, 10/28/2008 - 20:35

The sea is sad and gray, my friends,
It greets me with a tear;
Its mournful company it lends,
For nearly half a year.

Aboard this ship I stay, my friends,
Save for the days at dock;
How many hours on land depends:
I have to watch the clock.

The waves do sadly roll, my friends,
Each laps a lonely tongue;
The misty air – its raining wrends
A thousand songs, unsung.

Away from sea, below, my friends,
I learn about the ship,
And trace the power the engine sends;
I know which switch to flip.

The ocean life has called, my friends,
Far from the warmth of home;
Until my course with honor ends,
Amid the waves, I’ll roam.

I wrote this poem for Ezra a couple of days ago, to guess at how he must feel to be stuck on a ship for the next 176 days. It's part of his graduation requirements at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

That's cool that you wrote a poem to your brother, James!
I forgot to mention earlier that my favorite stanza is the last one.

Very well written! I really like the part about the tongues. It's very discriptive. I wrote a poem like that about fire. Except that mine wasn't about my brother...so sweet.....nice....something? Great job!

"The waves do sadly roll, my friends,

A thousand songs, unsung."

That's my favorite stanza.

It's sweet that you wrote this for your brother. :)

"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve." -Bilbo Baggins [The Lord of the Rings]

I think this is very good. I love how it rhymes. Very good :)

One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all

In the Land of Mordor where the shadows lie

That was a beautiful poem, James.

I love the sea. I love going on ships, I love being in the water... the main reason I can't wait for my 18th birthday (as distant as it is!) is because then I can go for a month or two to serve on the Doulos.

What country's flag does the Doulos fly? Do you know if it runs on steam?

"There are no great men of God. There are only pitiful, sorry men whose God is great beyond measure." - Paul Washer [originally Jonathan Edwards]

SOL Chapter 22 has been edited. I thought you should be the first to know- you were the first to comment (and probably the angriest). Besides, you're my oldest and possibly most devoted reader. (I love reading your comments.) So be sure to read the updated chapter, and especially my "explanation comment". All will be revealed. (BTW, you got so close to figuring it out.)
My apologies for your pain.

I didn't know you apreciated my comments so much. Yes, I admit I am a very devoted reader. I can't help it. The story you're writing is so -- for lack of a better word -- captivating. (Giligan's life is the hook, by the way.)
As for old...
...who are you calling old? I'm not old! (Am I?)

Thanks. (It's always Gilligan, isn't it? Everyone likes Gilligan. I knew it was a good thing to leave him alive after Chapter 6.)
I didn't say you were old. I said you were the oldEST. You're 22, which makes you the oldest.

That was incredible.I love it.

The waves do sadly roll, my friends,
Each laps a lonely tongue;
The misty air – its raining wrends
A thousand songs, unsung.

That part was my favorite.

Sounds just like Ezra's life, sadly

Wow, this was excellent. A bit late, since you posted this in '08, but I was just clicking around and found it.
