Kerrin (Care-IN)—a Highlander who snuck into the Lowlands to sell his daughter' artwork
Beno (BEN-oh)—Captain of the Royal Guard, one of Jevran's loyal friends
Danilos (DAN-i-LOWS)—the Head Counsellor, Danilos has a history with Highlanders and Dragons that makes him more dangerous that anyone realizes.
Jokk (Joe-K)—Leader of a village simply known as the Foot of Mount Arborn. Kerrin was one of Jokk's best friends
Fleet—Varian's Dragon mount
Archinodos (Are-CHI-no-DOS)/Archflame—the Great Dragon
Mount Arborn (AIR-borne)—the mountain sitting above Jokk's village, where most of the dragons make their home.
Great Dragon—the title given to the leader of the clan. He is usually descended from the Dragon-Father, Merrfang, and usually lives to be the oldest dragon of the clan. One of his responsibilities is guarding the Crown of Ages.
Crown of Ages—a crown worn back in the days when the Highlands and Lowlands were one country. It is said to give wisdom to the man who wears it
Tikah (Tee-KAH)—a kitchen girl; Mel's older sister; one of Varian's good friends
Mel—a stablehand; Tikah's younger brother; Varian's protégée.
Kylia (Ky-LEE-ah)—Kerrin's daughter who befriends Varian
Flameclaw—Jokk's Dragon mount
Darkfang—leader of the renegade Dragons known as the Lowland Dragons
Lowland Dragons—the nickname other Dragons have given the renegades, because many of their ancestors agreed with the ancestor of the Lowlanders in the war of the Crown of Ages
Loryss y Benlirath—the Dragons' name for the war of the Crown of Ages, in which two brothers split the kingdom and started the animosities between the countries
Onna (ON-nah)—a herbalist who is temperamental and always threatening to put "something nasty" in someone's drink
Watches—the Highlanders and Lowlanders alike tell time by the "watches" of the day and night. Every day is divided into four sections of six hours each, and these sections are called watches. The watches are: Forenoon (6 in the morning to 12 noon); Afternoon (12 noon to 6 in the evening); Evening Watch (6 in the evening until 12 midnight); and Lastwatch (12 midnight until 6 in the morning)
