Good Ol' Samwise Gamgee

Onward, forward, following Into darkest night
There’s no hope for them
Not a glimmer of light
Plodding on
Through hopeless gloom
Bearing an evil burden
The Ring of Doom
This fell upon Frodo Baggins
The heir of Bilbo the hobbit
His friend Sam wanted to go
His wish, well, he got it!
Sam had only wanted
To see the elves
Frodo took him beyond Rivendell
Through dark dwarven delves
Dear, good, simple Sam
He bore a burden none would bear
He followed Frodo to Mordor
And back again with care
Over mountains
And under them too!
Samewise’s hope never faltered
Even when Frodo’s fear grew
Good ol’ Samwise Gamgee
Who dreamed being brave
Never thought he’d be a warrior
And save his master from Shelob’s cave!
Good, dear Sam
Stayed with his friend
Carrying and protecting
To the bitter end
When Frodo’s strength failed
At the very last
Sam was there
When the Ring was cast
And when the mountain
Began to crack and fall
Sam was there with Frodo
At the end of all
Sam stayed at his master’s side
Through healing and years after
While his own family grew
Filling Bag End with laughter
Sam stayed as long as he could
Journeyed to the havens of gray
Received the book of red
And heard Frodo say
“Good bye for now, dear Sam.”
He finished the tale
And knew he’d go over the sea
To Valinor he’d sail
Following Frodo, Gandalf
Elrond, Bilbo the dear old lad,
And Galadriel, the Elven-Queen
Just as he’d always had.
Good ol’ Samwise Gamgee.

Dedicated to my friends…may we always remember Sam!

Clare D's poem "Thoughts of Bilbo Baggins" reminded me about this one I'd written some time ago about Sam. He's always been one of my favorite characters because of the deep friendship he shows Frodo.

Hmmm...good job on getting the storyline straight. Some of the meter is a tad off, it seems, but I didn't read it outloud, and that can sometimes back a huge difference.

Aw, that's sweet...I love Sam, too! Samwise the Brave!!

We all know he's the real hero of Lord of the Rings!

Great job on the poem!
