The Fire Juggler

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 ~*~I wrote this in just a few minutes, and hopefully sometime soon can turn it into a novel. Karli just popped into  my head...I think she bears investigating, what do you guys think? :0) ~*~

Karli flipped her kinky red hair behind her shoulder and sniffed. The booth she crouched by sold deep-fried peppers. The warm, tangy smell mingled with the smells of other foods and human and animal sweat. She settled against the booth, watching the people go by.

It wasn't just humans. Here and there, she could see an elf, tall and regal. A couple of gnomes went past, scrabbling to stay on their feet in a crowd more than twice their size. And once in a great while she spotted a dwarf, plowing ahead with rugged detachment, as if nothing could knock him off his feet.

She picked up her flat leather bag and slung the strap over her shoulder. Then she stepped into the martketplace. She pulled out three of her juggling balls and sauntered past the booths, lazily rotating the balls with one hand.

Once she had a small group's attention, she stopped and began juggling in earnest—still with one hand. With her left hand she began adding more balls. One, two three—nine balls whirled into the air. They glistened with bright colors in the late afternoon sun, claiming attention from passersby. She wove them in figure-eights, tall circles, short circles, behind her back, to one side.

Now for the crowd pleaser. Karli dipped her free hand into her bag and concealed the flint and steel firestarter that her friend Breth had made for her in her hand. She began juggling with both hands, rotating them in a medium-height circle. As each ball touched her left hand, she flicked the button of the firestarter with her thumb, igniting the balls on fire.

The gasps of the crowd attested to their surprise. She'd done well in hiding the firestarter. Karli smiled to herself and concentrated on her juggling. Every couple of passes or so, the balls required another lighting, since the breeze from being juggled would put out the flame.

Once she sensed people were ready to move on, yet reluctant to leave the spectacle, she decided to wrap up her performance. She dropped the firestarter into her bag, then dipped her hand into a bag of black powder that Breth had given her. The dwarves used it for starting fires when flint and steels didn't work, or for breaking apart large chunks of rock. She tossed the powder into the air near the height of the flaming balls' circuit.

It sparkled and made a crackling sound. More gasps of admiration came from the crowd as huge sparks floated down around her. Karli blew out each ball as she caught them in a pyramid, leaving the top ball flaming. She dipped her head in a bow.

The performance was finished.

I saw "The Fire Juggler" imprinted like red letter on my mind. My first thought was, "Dustfinger?" :) lol

But anyway, I hope you plan to write more, because, while this makes a nice read, it does make one ever so curious.

Thanks, Annabel and Erin!

Anna: I know it reminds one of Dustfinger....I couldn't come up with another title for it. I have an idea for a novel for Karli to go in, and the tentative title for that is Remember the Fire. Somehow I don't like that very well. Anyway, I think I'll focus on finishing Half Blood on here first--then maybe Karli will make another appearance. Or I might just e cruel and make y'all wait until I come out with the book about her. Mwahahaha! The power of authors! :0)

Dustfinger is right up next to Aragorn in my ranking, just as Mr. Knightley is next to Mr. Darcy and The Little Mermaid is next to Beauty and the Beast. :) So Karli reminding me of him is a good thing! Well, it's a good thing for catching my eye, anyway. (From now on, if anyone wants me to read something, just call it "Story about Dustfinger...")

If you make me wait I may get angry. And you of all people know what authors do to you if you anger them! >;)

I wasn't too fond of Dustfinger from the Inkheart movie (save that he made a fascinating character study). Is he any different in the books than in the movie? I'm thinking about reading the books. What are they like? Anything I need to watch out for?

I wouldn't put Mr. Knightley next to Mr Darcy. I didn't like Knightley--to be fair I must say I just didn't like Emma.

Thanks for the compliment about Karli. I like her lots, she seems to be a cool character. Unfortunately, her story isn't developing right now. My apologies, Anna, but you must learn to be patient and let inspiration hit! :0D "Mmmm, patient you must be young padawan..." Wow. DO NOT ask why I just quoted Yoda. I'm in an extremely random mood today. Must be because the homeschool orchstra started up again today and I got to see my friends all day!!! :0)

Dustfinger's very different in the books! They made him so unpleasant in the movie!!! And trust me, the movie changed everything about the book-and angered me deeply!!! You should definitely read them, they are really fantastic.

I haven't seen the Ink movie, but Dustfinger in the books was awesome. He made me cry several times over - and he was really the main reason I finally finished Inkdeath.

BTW, I like this bit, Heather, but I'm all for continuing Half Blood instead...lol

Actually, I haven't read the first Inkworld book for awhile, so I don't remember. But I do remember that I loved him in the movie and in Inkdeath, the third book. (He was the only reason I read it, too.)

The Inkworld books: Some teenage romance and swearing. I can't think of anything else, but anyone can feel free to correct me, as, again, I only read the third one recently and the other two are not fresh in my mind.

I disagree- Emma is my favorite until I read P&P, and P&P is my fav until I read Emma. :) It goes around and around. Emma herself is more annoying than Elizabeth, but she's so much improved by the end of the book that I can't help myself from loving her. And Knightley's character has less depth than Darcy's- but such a character! Not mysterious, but someone I can look up to, in more of a brother-figure way. :) My opinion, however, is not very sophisticated.

Okay, okay. I know what you mean. I won't bug you. :)

I love this!!  I really do hope you continue this. :)  I like how Karli has red hair...it goes with her fire juggling ability.

Hey! Don't make us wait!!! Lol :-). Maybe that's why I like Karli-because Dustfinger is my favorite character in the ink books-. PLEASE CONTINUE!!!!!

Brother: Then make it a four-wheel-drive motorcycle!

In fact, why are you even here reading comments on AP when you should be finishing Roliwyn?
