My Name

Submitted by Hannah W. on Mon, 06/01/2009 - 02:15

Stand up there and speak to us
about hope and about pain
There are so many words you're saying,
but all I wanted was my name

Which word, in which language,
which of them is mine?
Will I find it in the valley,
or on the mountains that I climb?

Who will speak it to me,
who will say, "You are this"
Some people say you find yourself
others say you have to wish

I wonder if the great blue heron
holds it in his bill
I wonder if it's with my fathers
buried in a hill

The trees and the wind speak at night
but the glass makes it too hard to hear
and even when I am outside
It's drowned out by our fear

Which letters, if there are some,
will spell out the sound I seek?
The mumbling mesh of syllables,
or perhaps we cannot speak

Stand up above the crowds of people
and preach about the shame
there are so many words you're saying,
but all I asked for was my name

I wonder if the dark waves sing it
as they crash upon the shore
I wonder sometimes if the searching's
even worth it anymore

Often we do ask each other,
what is in a name?
Is it something meaningful,
or just a human game?

If my mouth had never tasted
any languages at all
I wonder if I would better
understand what I am called

I won't be in the crowd of people, listening
while you preach your every claim
Becuase, for a moment, I thought I heard
someone call my name.

Intriguing. I really enjoyed this :)

"there are so many words you're saying,

Nice poem, Hannah! I really liked it!!

I found this excellent. I love the imagery you use.

"...a, you're wearing a bucket on your head?" Pierre,

I was REALLY impressed by this. It's one of the most original things I've ever read... I don't think I've ever heard a poet talk about looking for their "name" - and you obviously don't mean just a few letters. Is it in the waves... or will the poet find it in a hill? I loved that; trying to find who you are. Are you a woods girl? A city girl? An in-a-heron's-beak girl? :D And it made me think about how we each have a name in heaven that no one knows about (isn't that a Bible verse, or am I mistaken?) and God's "I have called you by name" - He knows who we are; that is, He knows our "name"... and that's how He's called us: "Come be mine; come be yourself; find your name with Me, because I know it... only I know it."

Thank you! and I really like what you said about having a name in heaven that no one knows about... what a wonderful notion.
Something really strange happened to me the other day. I was playing a game in which I said that my name was Heron, and then a heron flew over the yard...

What Bernadette said...This is wonerful (I think that's what I mean to say...I don't know, that's sounds a little inadequate).
