Chosen Freedom

It shimmers ahead
in the midafternoon light
and the warmth and the sky and the sun
and the grass's finally green again
but the trees are still bare--
It shimmers, distant, but there.

Feet on the pedals,
three fingers on brake,
and already there's breeze and the catch
of warm breath in throat, and push off
and wobble a bit as it starts--
then gliding, and blurry and sharp.

It comes closer in sight,
past the pink-blossomed tree
and then nearly there, but still not
quite reached it yet, and the wind
picks up and courses right through--
and then there, and the distant now true.

Not a great sea, nor ship
but a bike and the wind
is a feeling of flying and fast
and today a lesson is learned, and truth
of wishing is uncovered and loose--
we always have the freedoms we choose.

I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking:

"It shimmers, distant, but there."

I need to find a new synonym for "lovely". How about "alluring, attractive, charming, exquisite"?
