Musings

Some time ago (a couple weeks, I think), I was taking a walk on the bike path running near our house. It was a foggy day, but as I love walking in fog, I didn’t mind the clammy cold. I started at our street where the path crosses over, and headed down the path, going northeast. Ahead was pure fog; I could not see a thing in front of me. Taking some steps, and looking back, I could presently see nothing behind me either except the mist. I could only see some feet in front and behind me, and some feet on both sides of me. Walking as I was in this manner, a thought struck me.
It seemed to me that the walk in the fog reflected our walk in life. In our life-walk, we start when we are born (with my foggy walk, on our street). We start on our path chosen for us. Ahead, in the future, we cannot see anything; we have to trust that our Creator will guide us in whatever happens. Farther on in life we cannot see behind us: people do get forgetful as they get older, and often past occurrences seem but a dream. We can only see what’s right in front of us. We can also see on either side of us, a temptation to stray off the path where it seems to be clear, but we would get hopelessly lost. So we plod on, and on. Sometimes we do stray off our road, but if we renew our trust in the One who can guide us, a loving but powerful hand will reach out and gently push us back on the path.
Eventually, we reach our goal (in the case of my walk in the fog, the other road which the bike path leads to). We can still only see in front of us and behind is an impenetrable grey; is that what it will be like when we reach heaven? Will our journey on earth be forgotten, unseen when we enter the glory that awaits us? It makes one wonder.
So I decided to share with whoever takes some time to read this little essay, some of my thoughts. Perhaps they will make one think more about life, heaven, fog, whatever comes to mind. If I could just make one person stop and think a little, I feel that I will have accomplished something.

Clare, I feel the same why. I love how God talks to us through nature.
