Lament from a Lonely Heart

Submitted by Clare Marie on Fri, 02/27/2009 - 15:18

Against fire black and whips of flame
You stood your ground, stooped with pain
You leaned on your staff, wizened but strong
You struck his sword, mocked his thong
At last you cast him down from on high,
Morgoth's soldier; then tell me why
You lingered at that fateful moment,
Falling in a fiery torrent?
How could you, so great, the victor
Be dragged cruelly down, Mithrandir?
Friend, my friend, I am lost without you
I cannot see what I should do
You were ever there, guiding me
How can I guide, I foresee?
Men my name honor, elves call me wise
Do they not see beneath my guise?
And yet I know well what you would say
A hobbit composed a poem one day
I must repeat once more those verses,
Accept my road and many curses
One day my dreams will be all fulfilled
Will I be saddened, or will I be thrilled?
My destiny I never wanted,
To be hidden, scorned, and ever hunted.
I never wanted the crown or throne
And yet I want not to be alone
There is bitter and sweet in my destiny-cup
One can look down or one can look up
Without you at my side, my dearest friend
Can I still see the very end?
O Pilgrim grey, come back to me
Help me my hidden path to see
I will bear this weight, this lasting pain
In the hope you will come home again.

Is that not my name?

Silence...

My road is hedged with swords.

Loneliness...

I will journey on.

Beautiful. Very well done.

You captured Aragorn's sorrow at losing Gandalf's wisdom very well here, Claire. Good job! I really like these verses, especially "My road is hedged with swords...Loneliness...I will journey on." Well done, and congrats for being here a year!

And it's appropriate, too, since it's Aragorn's birthday today.

And it's the anniversary of his death.

But I prefer the birthday. :D

I prefer not to think about that, actually... I was purposely NOT mentioning it...

"Estel, Estel!"
That broke my heart. :(

So sad...I love it in that sad sort of way.

LOVE the ending, how it goes from rapid words to a sudden slow trickle:

"Is that not my name?

Silence...

My road is hedged with swords.

Loneliness..."

VERY effective; the quiet of it jumped out at me and touched me.

I love this poem! Especially the last bit. The line "One can look down or one can look up" really struck me. It's quite true, isn't it? :)

I have a... erm... well, a bit of an embarassing question about this... er... what did you mean by "thong" up at the top? I mean, did you really mean a... *ahem* Anyway, when I read that, I thought it was going to be a funny poem. I'm just not quite sure that what I was thinking of was what you meant! ;)

Thanks, guys. :)

Sarah B: No, I don't think what you're thinking of is what I was! :P In fact, when I showed it to my mom, she asked about that too. She was like "Thong?" Actually, I meant the thong of a whip. :)

I did not even notice that... I guess I'm just really used to archaic language...

I just watched FotR through Gandalf's death last night...this is so appropriate. I could totally identify with Aragorn's sorrow and despair.
