The candles are lit to chase away the dusk
As I sit down at my writing desk
With my quill pen and bottle of ink
The task falls to me to record a quest
I dip the pen in the dark liquid ink
And spread a parchment before me
The nib touches parchment, the ink flows
The room fills with a thousand shapes I barely see
As I write, a unicorn prances across the desk
His hoofs wave, with his horn he defies all
Now marching past, a line of kings
Grim and noble before their house's fall
A dragon winging by, iridescent purple
From his mouth he breathes the reddest fiery flame
A hero's face rises about the rest
His sword, all evil fears its fame
The elf-lord crowned with gilt oaken leaves
His court in their leafy attire
The dwarves feasting in carven halls
Above on the mountain the wise centaur
Thus my ink cast its beautiful spell
Weaving a tale to match bards of old
But like all tales it must have an ending
There it lies, writ in magical ink of gold
I've been in a poetry mood lately...
So this is what spawned of a picture-taking mood and playing with a website design program I have. I will (hopefully) be able to put the picture below the poem...OK, doesn't look like it. Mmmm. OK, I'll change my profile pic to that, and I'll keep it like that for a while...so when you read this poem head to my profile to see the picture that inspired it. :0) Thanks for reading!

Tamerah: Thanks! It's really not too hard to write poetry like this, it's only an abcb rhyme pattern. PS-what were you doing up so late? Crazy!
Marie: Thank you!
Anna: Sorry about the pic...and my profile isn't changing either...botheration! It was really cool, though, a quill pen in a bottle of ink with a candle behind the feather...yeah. I'll find a way to get it to you. Thanks!

That line is gold. You speak the mind of every writer.
BTW, I noticed on your profile that you are in that "Christian Writer's Guild." I was looking at that a couple days ago online, and I was wondering if you could tell me a little about how much of a time commitment it actually is, and if it is worth it or not.

Thank you so much, Ezra!
The Christian Writers Guild is incredible. I'm doing the Apprentice level lessons right now, which are due every two weeks, and so far I've been able to get the lessons done in one or two days worth of researching, writing, etc. Basically I sit around for a week and a half in between lessons! :0) As for being worth it...oh yeah. The beginning lessons are pretty basic, but then they have you doing stuff like compiling editor contact information for several magazines you'd eventually like to write for, writing an interview article, stuff like that. That's in the first section...in the next sections, you work on specific types of articles and writing fiction, and they even have a couple of lessons on screenwriting! Plus you're a member of the guild as long as you're taking the course, so you get a newsletter every month, discounts on books, writing conferences, and accessories, and you get to enter their Operation First Novel contest for free (first prize, publishing and a $20,000 advance royalty!). I think its totally worth it, plus since all their mentors are published authors or editors it's really cool to have feedback from a pro. You should definitely try it out if you're serious on pursuing writing!

Hmm...
Heather,
It sounds like exactly what I need, but I will probably wait until I'm finished with nuke school before I start.
Thanks for the inside scoop, though.

Awesome poem, Heather! I don't know what else to say because everybody else has said it already! ;)
Cool picture too. I love inkwells! (Sorry that was a little random.)
Thumbs up!

Clare: Thanks. I love the old-fashioned type of writing, calligraphy and all that. Deep down I am very much one of the old "romantic" time-period writers. :0)

I like the imagry
I could see the unicorn and the line of kings as I read... I think the line about the hero and the sword was my favorite.
And the picture of the candle and the inkwell is stunning.

Wow, Heather, that is amazing! You put into words what I've always imagined, only you made it even better! The entire atmosphere of the poem was just beautiful, and the pictures you brought to mind are enchanting! Good job!
