Dragons in the Air

Afraid to ask questions,
pretending they don't exsist
surely things will break
sooner or later,
for the questions hover, watching
like dragons in the air.

Standing near the rooftops,
looking past garages, trees
basketball hoops and cars,
the distant places,
someday, I'll go there
and the words hover, waiting,
like dragons in the air.

In the night, voices speaking
tones hushed and hard to hear,
straining ears, begging
so much knowledge, somewhere
and the whispers hang there, quiet,
like dragons in the air.

Candle burning brightly, hot
flame like flickering tongue
licks up wax and questions unasked
and the dreams of all the young
but when the candle is blown out--
the smoke, it glides and curls near there,
then silent and invisible,
like dragons in the air.

Darkness like a blanket, close
warm and soft to me,
I feel the stirring in the room
close my eyes to sleep,
and still I know they're all still there,
just watching, waiting,
these dragons in the air.

Candle smoke always does remind me of dragons... somehow this poem was inspired by that.

This is really great, Hannah. I like the ending best, but especially your description of candles. I've often thought of the same thing, but was never able to put it into words like you have. :) Great job.
