CHESS WALTZ
The King and Queen were arguing
about which way to go,
the pawns were dancing all around,
and running to and fro.
The Knights were sleepy,
the Rooks were sad,
so when the Bishops pushed on past,
both were feeling bad.
Across the squares the Pawns did skate,
The Bishops chasing after,
While Knights, now wide awake,
shouted, "faster! Faster!"
The Rooks dodged left,
the Rooks dodged right,
but there they went--
straight through the fight!
The King and Queen jumped back an inch
The Rook looked at the floor,
while the Knights, quite looney,
shouted loudly for more
The Bishops shushed,
the Pawns stopped still,
The Knights were quiet at long last--
of noise they'd had their fill.
The King looked up
the Queen did too
The Rooks took this time
to scurry through.
Then the King laughed loud and glad,
The Knights suppressed a giggle,
The Queen looked not so very mad,
And then, a Pawn did wiggle...
The King and Queen caught hands at last,
and spun around the others,
they laughed and danced so happily,
while the rest gazed on in wonder
Until the Pawns joined in with glee,
and the Rooks were soon to follow,
The Knights chased the Bishops,
whose frowns were quite soon swallowed.
The happy party,
dancing round,
a spin, a twirl, a leap,
It's what they love to do, I've found--
once I fall asleep.
