The Past and Its Effect

I was about to be brave
But then reality came in
And I faked smiles to appease her
Though my watery eyes betray me
And I whimpered into pillows
And barely concentrated
Yet they came around to celebrate
And I pushed them away, crying
Waking the next morning with
A song ringing in my ears
A song about tragedies
Putting on my mask of smiles
I wandered aimlessly through the halls
Breaking behind closed doors
Screaming, wounded, what's wrong with me
I'm too this, not enough that,
Pinch and prod and prick and hide
Change, change, change, be someone better

So I went, destroyed myself, only to rebuild
Rediscover
A hurried mess, cardboard and glue
I'm a paper girl in the middle of the rain
Trimmed to short, hemmed to long
And yet you still found something there
Something, I know not what, to love

Though I still fear the child within
And I tell her to sit down, shut up
I wince when you move jerkily
Shrink back when your voice hardens by accident
Berate myself when your air darkens
My skin feels too tight when you hurry
I straighten up when your comfort comes out false
I find myself quieter, trying not to anger you
Though I know I probably won't
Better safe than sorry

Oh. My. Goodness-gracious-me!! This is...is SO good. This is like your best poem! The rhythm is amazing, and the word choice is great.

"I'm too this, not enough that,
Pinch and prod and prick and hide"

"I'm a paper girl in the middle of the rain
Trimmed to short, hemmed to long"

I LOVE THAT.

"Though I still fear the child within
And I tell her to sit down, shut up"

And that. Unfortunately I have to do that all the time. :P

Really good job, Kat. I'm very impressed and I love it to bits.
