The Greek army also consisted of men from several other Greek states while the Spartans took up three hundred of the total of four thousand men. Most of the men of the army took the chance of escape and all who remained were three hundred Spartans and seven hundred of another place in Greece called Thespiae. Among those to stay were Menegal, Luvilia, Ebhali, Havam, Wixtil, Dislin, Ranfia, Gravan, Taniva, Rilvay, Hilfarey, and Leonidas.
Menegal walked up to Luvilia after Leonidas had left.
“Sifli must have told the Persians. He also must have been the footsteps we heard when we were at watch duty.”
“Yes, you are most likely right,” replied Luvilia.
“What is this you speak about?” asked Havam, walking up to them with Wixtil and Dislin.
“We know how the Persians found out about the way around us,” said Menegal, and he told them of Sifli.
“Traitor!” said Dislin.
“How could he of done that!?” cried Wixtil, shaking his head.
“I do not know,” said Menegal, looking to the south.
“The sun is setting. Will they attack by night?” asked Havam.
“It would be a better strategy for their side, but harder for us,” answered Luvilia.
“Remember that dream I had near eleven days ago?” said Menegal to Luvilia.
“Yes,” said Luvilia.
“This battle I think is what it was about,” said Menegal.
Luvilia glanced at him with understanding, and nodded his head.
The sun was slowly setting with its glory of the colorful sky surrounding, and the cool mountain evening air began to blow. Menegal shivered and pulled his cape around his shoulders. Ebhali had been watching the sun set and the men around him. They had all begun to talk to one another to ease the thought of what approached. Gravan worked on more arrows, for they would be surely needed, and talked to some of the younger soldiers of how an arrow was made. Ebhali could see that the night was going to be clear and the temperature chilly. Soon the talk of men quieted and many laid down to rest while they could. The watchmen were doubled and again Menegal, Luvilia, Havam, Wixtil, and Dislin were called to the North bounds of the army for a night watch. Ebhali soon decided it was best to sleep, so he laid down on his mat and slept through the night.
At dawn he woke to the sound of the Persian’s attack, but he only had eyes for the sun rising slowly and pushing back the night sky.
The End
Historical facts: All the characters in this story are fictional, except for Leonidas. All the Spartans and the men from Thespiae died in that battle, but for one man.
