I want to make a work of art
To come across as smart
I have word goals
I have tongue coals
Ideas burn cerebrally
Come alive incrementally
Burning midnight oil
I slave and I toil
Write in waking hours
Dream of novels in my sleep
But these dreams though sweet
Will not eternity for me keep
You see if I slave for years
Write for decades
Or sing for ages
All I've done is nothing
Nothing in the face of heaven
Nothing in the hand of God
If I have not prayed to Jesus
If I have not wept for sin
If I have not read my Bible
With wide-open seeing eyes
I've drunk the sand and left the water
Lord, I've looked past the Father
Thrown my life a world away
And purposefully went astray
To write for Christ is all I want
To sing to Heaven above
To reach out to all of His people
With His masterpiece of Love

Love it, Damaris! Great work, and even better message.

. . . I have a feeling I'm
. . . I have a feeling I'm going to walk around all tonight saying, "I have word goals / I have tongue coals." That just riveted me with delight!!!!! My mouth likes it ^.^ And my heart identifies. I also like how you continued the burning imagery.
Beautiful poem with a powerful message, strongly conveyed, Damaris!!
