Fifty things I learned this summer

Fifty things I learned this summer:

1. Whatever it is, a glass of milk is the appropriate response.

2. It really is more fun to say "Ready, set, WEASEL!"

3. There is nothing quite like listening to music in the middle of the night.

4. Writing in the ancient hours of night and wee hours of morning is a lovely thing.

5. All the people on the Titanic died. (Really. The last living survivor is no longer living.)

6. If everyone had theme music as they do in movies, we wouldn’t need identification.

7. Writing down random words and spontaneously bursting into song really does ease one’s mind.

8. It’s not worth it to argue with people who don’t like one’s favorite things.

9. A crush is an exquisite waste of affections and emotions.

10. Always nickname people from The Lord of the Rings. If possible, make them villains.

11. It is impossible to write "I heart John Piper" in Greek. (The language has no j sound.)

12. To err is human. To Arrr is pirate! (I got that from a T-shirt in a store window.)

13. Babar the Elephant would be scandalized by all my favorite movies.

14. Legolas- and people like him- may be incredibly easy to make fun of, but that doesn’t mean one should.

15. God knows what He’s doing- again!

16. God keeps His promises- again!

17.The Bible is true- again!

18. The Bible and its Author are WONDROUS- again!

19. It’s amazing how often one must remind oneself of the obvious. (See above.)

20. A trollop is a female troll.

21. Never play Boggle or Scrabble with someone who gloats (or questions one’s knowledge of words).

22. When one plays a game with oneself, one must expect, at some point, to lose.

23. Don’t let one’s counselor at summer camp injure herself.

24. Don’t be twenty minutes late, especially after one’s counselor has injured herself.

25. Always bring extra pencils and pens.

26. Don’t keep a light on past midnight.

27. Unpack the suitcase and put it away. Just do it.

28. Sometimes it’s a good thing to realize one has an obsession.

29. It’s better to try to get rid of that obsession (or lessen it).

30. …Unless one’s obsession is Jesus.

31. Books are something someone (I) can live without for about a week.

32. Sometimes it’s okay if we lose our minds. (Kudos to the band Seabird for this lyric!)

33. Even creeps need the Gospel! ~the user Jemiteaser

34. If one is someone’s sole friend for a long time, that person gets jealous when the other finally makes more friends, no matter how unreasonable the original friend knows she is being.

35. Some stories- dare I say it!- do not deserve- to-be-finished! *GASP*

36. Apples to Apple was not meant to be taken seriously.

37. Giggling annoys grownups.

38. If one has more than twenty pictures of a thing, one probably needs to take a break from thinking about it.

39. Not everything one likes needs to be written down… but it’s probably a good idea.

40. Always take a big bag to put on one’s lap. It’s a security thing.

41. Cussing? Jesus says no!

42. If one MUST have dreams about Aragorn rescuing oneself from someone trying to suck out one’s soul, for heaven’s sake don’t repeat them!

43. Writing poems is inexpensive.

44. Always finish science BEFORE the next school year starts.

45. Suggesting one’s family skip a year of school never works.

46. People don’t always judge one for having the midnight munchies. They may, however, be disinclined to acquiesce to one’s request.

47. Ignoring one’s father is highly inadvisable. In fact, it’s extremely illegal.

48. Asking him for a cat will always be met with a laugh.

49. Editing is a friend.

50. If one really want to finish something, don’t ramble- finish it!

Bonus- Favorite autumn things:

the smell

the trees

sweaters, hoodies, and coats

knitting, yarn, and pattern magazines

Some of these were funny, Anna...and some are so true!! :0) I'm glad that someone else had a summer of learning. Thanks for sharing!!

As a San Diegan, I have to rely on my imagination to reproduce your picture of autumn--coats and steamers and colorful trees are rarities here. But, at least we still have cookies and Thanksgiving...

Anyway, I very much enjoyed this essay. To echo Heather, it was sometimes funny and somestimes true (and sometimes both, of course :). )

I wonder where some of those came from... :)

Something I learned this summer - Seriously, the Bible is such a Calvinist book!

And a 'quick trip' through the OT with Anna takes about 3 hours.

15 - 19 are my favorites. :) And an addition to 21... is also never play Boggle with someone who writes down every vowel/consonant combination that MIGHT POSSIBLY be a word. ... and then makes each round last about 20 minutes by waiting until we're getting ready for the next round to look them up. *cough*Nate*cough*.
My apologies for the gloating. :) I'm sad we couldn't get our hands on Scrabble, though!

LOL, this was funny!! I love 38 and 39, as well as 42. I'll probably write something like that- unless you don't want me to for fear that I am copying you in secret! *Gasp! Only it wouldn't be exactly secret......I'll be quiet now.

Lots of these are very funny! I can't pick my favorites. This summer, I learned what it was like to fly in an airplane. I went with my dad to Florida to visit family. Flying means: Long waits in the airport; uncomfortable seats in the airport while waiting; crowds of people in major airports; chairs that do not lean back enough on the airplane; ears that pop as one gets higher, but don't clear up as one gets lower; some turbulence; gladness to be at the end of a ten hour day, and seeing ones grandparents looking around for one in the airport. :) :)

Heather: The Summer of a Lifetime, indeed it was. :)

Annabel: My favorite singer is from San Diego, haha. :) Jealousy! And sometimes, you aren't missing much. Michigan winters are kind of brutal...

Kyleigh: I'm sure you were there for at least 5 of them. I'm sad we never got to the NT... We should have started the first night so we could do the whole Bible! And... "What if I just now made it up?" "LOL!"

Erin: Go ahead, really. You're learning something!

Sarah: Thanks! I try.

Laura: I know what you mean, only not quite so dramatic. I slept most of the time on my flight this summer. I have been blessed in my slumbering skillz. :D

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 Ahem: Ἀγαπέω Ἰωάννην Πίπερ.

Do you want it in Hebrew too?

אֶאֶהֵב יוֹחָנָן פִ֫יפֶר

I rest my case.

(Ironically, John is a Hebrew name, and Hebrew doesn't have the English "J" sound either. It's really Yokhanan. You can't really transliterate that into either Greek or English, because neither language has the Hebrew kh sound. Using a K with an H is cheating.)

If you like, I could write that epic poem in Hebrew, or Greek, or both if you prefer (with English translation of course) ...

...out of curiosity, what language do they speak in Llorleya?

Isn't it kind of cheating anyway, all-knowlegeable-James-who-feels-the-need-to-correct-me? (And somehow, I don't actually resent it.) And I actually meant phonetically...

If you decide that English is not good enough for the epic poem, then I would much prefer Greek. No slight to Hebrew, of course, it's just that I can decipher the other.

What language do they speak in Llorleya? The speak the language of the leaves as they titter at the wind, and the language of the grass when the dew clothes it, and the language of the baby's first laugh. So, I suppose that means they speak English with Irish accents.

No, I'm kidding. Seriously, I'm not sure. ...The Common Speech of Westron?

Sorry, Anna, I didn't mean to show off. I simply get excited at any mention of Greek or Hebrew.

Hmmm... Maybe you should leave it at English with Irish accents; more simple that way. Tolkein never did get close to completeing a basic structure and vocabulary for Westron.

Hakuna matata. :) It's all good. So does my uncle. He says I should open a bookstore called "anaginosko" books. (except in greek)

I never really paid attention to the scructure of Tolkien's language. All I learned to do was write phonetic Elvish, which serves its purpose well.

That was fun. :) Thanks for sharing!
