Love and Silence

Ellie knew that she loved him. She also knew that it was inexplicable: there was no reason in the world for her to love him. But every time she told herself she shouldn’t love him, it had no effect. She reprimanded herself for not being more obedient to her own instruction.

She sighed. All her life she had imagined that falling in love would be wonderful. Not like this. It never occurred to her that it might be with someone who did not return her affection.

She plucked a blade of grass. Love was supposed to be glorious.

Sometimes, when she was feeling hopeful, she thought he might care about her. But she realized that he probably thought her indifferent to him.

She twirled the blade of grass between her fingers. Love should be reciprocal.

Had he been observant he would have seen how much she loved him, in her quiet way, which was so different from all the other girls. Because of its subtlety it was dismissed as nonexistent. But her silence was no impediment to her feelings. Every day she thought about him, and each thought was loving and forgiving. She even forgave him for not loving her.

She watched the couples around her, talking happily to each other. They seemed so casual. Love was a matter of course to them.

She was jealous of the girls who seemed so happy, so secure. And yet, she did not quite understand how they could be happy: the boys they liked were nothing compared to him. Ellie watched the girl. The girl with the alluring smile.

Everything in Ellie wanted to hate this girl, wanted to wish this girl gone. But she saw how much he loved this girl, this girl who wasn’t shy about her regard, this girl with the flattery and the evident affection. And Ellie found that she couldn’t hate her.

He walked up to Ellie. He and that girl who clung to him. They chatted with Ellie for a moment. Ellie smiled pleasantly.

Ellie still knew: whatever happened, she would always love him.

That guy should know better. Ellie's a real gem and he's missing it!
He's dense.
He needs to wake up before it's too late ... before he looses her forever!

That IS sad. Is it over already??

This story is very true to life and you can put yourself into Ellie's character quite easily, good job Amy. :)
