“Please sing now.”
You obey. You listen dazedly to your own voice. Och, I wonder how bad that actually sounded? Mmm...that note was smooth. Yikes, it’s over.
“Now read.”
Again you comply. You hear the biting sarcasm in your voice, the delight, the sadness; you feel the lines on your tongue and the character lives through you just for a moment, yet you can detachedly think these thoughts. Perhaps you should have said that line more...
“Thank you.”
You then try to answer their questions as coherently as possible, giggling nervously at intervals.
They thank you again and it’s over.
You gulp. Next is the worst step: waiting.
It was so quick! How can anyone possibly know what you’ve got in a matter of seconds? Maybe they don’t, but they do know what you gave.

During an audition, I think
During an audition, I think I'm doing good, but afterwards I see everything I sould have done better.

hey
Amy, I really like this piece. It feels really real. :)
...it was so much fun seeing you last night! How did you get your hair like that?
Great acting by the way.

Thank you
Yes, it was great that you came! I'm so glad you liked the play. Hopefully you can come to another one sometime in the future.
My mother did my hair; I believe she twisted it into position, stuck several hair combs and piles of hair pins into it, then sprayed it with about a gallon of hairspray. : ) My hair is kind of thick and heavy, and didn't want to stay up.
Thank you both (Brianna and Ben) for your comments!
Amy
(yeah, my hair is usually the same)
I would love to come to another play of yours. You will have to keep us updated. Also, if you ever needed extra actors or anything, I would love to help out. :)

Great job!
All those of us who have ever audtioned for something know exactly how it feels! This is a realistic and fantastic piece! I loved reading it. And it reminded me very much of the last audition I did...
Thank you for posting this! I loved it.
What were you auditioning for?
Auditions, exams...
Auditions, exams... *shudder*
Nasty.
The worst part is when you do it in a totally new place, so it echoes and sounds different and confuses your brain even more; and you're already wondering what the examiner/judge/whatever is thinking and you're wondering if maybe you should have picked another piece...
I've only ever done 2 real auditions, but they were scary. :P One was for ballet, and I couldn't see the person showing us the patterns, so I completely bombed that. The other was last month at music camp, that went well, sight reading for band the next day did not and I ended up not being in orchestra because of that.
Oh well, what's done is done...
Lovely essay, though. :)
Reading "The Audition"
Reading "The Audition" reminds me of when, after a plane trip, my ears are somewhat plugged and I can hear my own voice as though it were someone else reciting lines. I am always painfully conscious of the drama of my life after plane trips. :-)
