Helpful ideas for AP (forum)

Submitted by Aalen Fideli on Tue, 08/14/2012 - 17:56

Since my useless rant I've been thinking about what would truly be helpful on ApricotPie. Number One: Next and Previous Chapter Buttons. You could do this yourself by going into previous chapters and adding links to the next chapter, but it would be three million times more helpful if there were a button. Since someone has to approve content before it gets published, they could find out which story it belongs to and connect it to the previous chapter. If it makes it any easier, Authors can include a note to Moderators signifying the story and chapter-flow it belongs to. Number Two: Follow Story Option. Readers can select an option to be notified by email when something is added to a certain story. That's basically it. Number Three: Forum Content. A content type meant specifically for discussions that doesn't deplete comments. Since this type of content could easily devolve into a chatroom, there would probably have to be either a Moderator or a daily comment limit. An honor code is probably held by nearly every Author on AP, so I'm not too worried. To finish I want to say that, while I would like to have these things implemented, I understand why they might not be, and accept that.

The first one I can fix, being an editor. The others would be in James' department. He is currently very busy, so it will be awhile before he could get to anything.

I will be willing to add a link to the the previous/next chapter, but will only do this if specified. If you want me to do this, than say something like this at the end of your post:

"Please insert links for previous/next chapter"

I will then delete your request and insert links. The Previous Chapter link will be at the top, and the Next Chapter link will be at the end. I will follow this outline unless author specifies otherwise. Of course when you post a chapter in a story, you won't have the next chapter posted yet. Therefore, I will go back to the last chapter and insert a Next Chapter link.

If you would like me to insert links in previous chapters, or a story that you have already written, please feel free to contact me about that.

You could contact him and give him these ideas (I advise this), just don't expect anything to happen for awhile.

"My greatest wish for my writing is that it would point you to the Savior."

Good ideas. I especially like the Forum ones. APers tend to get into discussions (at least, I know I do at times), so it would be nice. And I agree, we're all on the same page here--I doubt there would be any name-calling or "my way is better" type of comments. :)

I second the forum idea, basically! :D But I know James is busy. So I don't expect that to happen any time soon, if at all. I love Apricot Pie just the way it is already--that would just be a neat feature.

Oh--and I also like the Follow Story option!

I think that the follow story feature would be great!

I'll just tell James about this, and make sure that he reads it.

"My greatest wish for my writing is that it would point you to the Savior."

Um, yeah, great ideas. The previous/next chapter buttons is great; and I'm all in favour of a forum! :D <3

I think your ideas are good.

I am pretty satisfied how AP is right now, except...I think it would be just SO neat if I could 'favorite' people's stories. Of course, I am fine without it but that has been a wistful musing of mine lately.

I think that number one most appeals to me. That would be really neat if Arthur could do that. But I am not quite sure about number three. For me, Apricotpie.com is a writing website for homeschoolers and homeschooler graduates to share their writing and comment on others' works. Nothing more. It is not for chatting purposes. We should leave chatting for email if we want to know an author more. That is just my opinion...feel free to disagree.

Arthur: What rights does an editor have? I have been wanting to ask you that since you seem to be the only person on this site that has "Editor" with their name.

If I liked a story, I would definitely make sure that the author knows. But I was just thinking that it would be neat if I could also favorite authors' stories too. eg. On Facebook, I know that if you liked something you could "like" it. (Just because I know this doesn't mean that I approve of FaceBook.) So I was just wishing that there would be some kind of option similar to my example. But again, I am completely fine without it.

Doesn't AP already have a forum?

There are only four other apricotpie members that have the editorial role.

I agree with your statement about Facebook, and I do think that a "like" option would be very nice. Though I would rather have a different name than like...

I think that there are a few more people that are editors, but they are people that aren't very active anymore.

An editor has these rights (this may scare you):

Edits/previews all post except those of Monthly Writers.
If there is anything that he deems is inappropriate or objectionable or completely stupid he does not publish; anything that passes muster is published. (This is mainly what I do)

Can edit/delete anybody's posts.

Can edit/delete anybody's profiles.

Can edit/delete anybody's comments.

This is all that I know how to do. Admins (James) have all these powers too, plus much more.

"My greatest wish for my writing is that it would point you to the Savior."

Haha, Arthur, you didn't scare me. :) I guessed that since you are an EDITOR, than you probably would EDIT stuff. I just wanted to know HOW much stuff. :)

p.s. I found out (wonder where?) that Keri looks over stuff too. So does most of the monthlies on here edit people's stuff too?

There already is a forum--ap.bonaplus.com--that all AP-ers are welcome to join. It hasn't been very active in a long, long time but fresh blood will certainly turn that around!

Aalen--Thank you! :-)

Lucy Anne--Yeah, it is technically a writing website, and I love that. I just think having a forum on this site would be neat as well. :) Forums to me are a lot different than chatting--chatting seems very casual, like IMing or something. (Which I have used on Facebook before, when I was on it. hehe!) Forums seem to be a lot more formal, at least in the way I see them. I don't know; maybe I'm wrong! :D

Liking a story would be neat, as well.

Sarah--oh yeah! I think I've seen that before. I'll check it out. I just thought it would be neat to have an on-site forum! :-)

I think if there is ever a "liking" or "favoriting" button it should be more like a "treasure" button signifying both that you liked the story and that it would be listed among your "treasures".

Also, there isn't really a forum in AP. which forces us to do this: use the comments.
since I only have one left I'd like to say that maybe by the time a normal post gets discussions in the comments it could be unlocked to forum mode.
which would be good now...

Aalen: I said that I wanted something SIMILAR to those FaceBook "like" buttons. But to create all these extra gadgets (that are far from necessary) it takes much time and labor of HTML or whatever.

There is a forum just like Sarah said. It's just not directly on here. And I hope it stays that way. But I guess if we ever have a debate here like Homey's "Before You Meet Prince Charming" (a book that I loved though) it would be neat if we had forum mode comments and all.

Arthur: So could you please put a next/previous chapter button on my "A Dream is Just a Dream...or is it? Chapter One and Two"? Just those two chapters. Because I want to see how you do it. And then, after seeing it, I can determine whether or not I know how to do it. Because I know some HTML. But of course, you may not use HTML either. Oh and yes, besides being able to edit and delete people's stuff, can you publish other non-monthlies articles/stories?

"It is not the length of life, but the depth of life." Ralph Waldo Emerson

I will do that.
Yes, I can publish things, and in fact that is what I do the most; if a non-monthly writer's thing is published, it is most likely that I published it.

"My greatest wish for my writing is that it would point you to the Savior."

Um...wait. I thought that Keri did all of mine?? So I guess whoever gets to it first will publish it or only you will do it?
